Q: <strong>Does an 80 PLUS Gold rating mean a PSU belongs in Tier A?</strong>

No. 80 PLUS Gold is an efficiency certification , while a quality tier considers a broader set of criteria. Electrical performance, protection behaviour, and other design characteristics can affect tier placement. Two Gold-certified PSUs can therefore receive different assessments. Read the exact model’s test report alongside its efficiency rating.

Q: <strong>What do <a href="https://www.cybenetics.com/index.php?option=power-supplies#view=v115&compareView=c115&sort=model%3Aasc">Cybenetics</a> ETA and LAMBDA ratings mean?</strong>

ETA evaluates efficiency-related performance , including overall efficiency, power factor, standby consumption, and 5VSB efficiency. LAMBDA evaluates acoustic performance using measured noise levels. These ratings help you compare energy efficiency and operating noise, but neither should be treated as a complete PSU quality or safety ranking.

Question 1

What Is the Best Power Supply in 2026?

Accepted Answer

There is no single “best” power supply for everyone. The best PSU depends on your system’s total wattage requirements, GPU model, efficiency needs, and budget. High-quality brands offering 80+ Gold or Platinum certified units with full protection features are generally recommended for modern builds.

Question 2

How Much Wattage Power Supply Do I Need for My PC?

Accepted Answer

The required wattage depends on your CPU, GPU, RAM, storage devices, and other components. You should calculate your system’s total power consumption first using a PSU calculator, then choose a power supply with slightly higher wattage for safe headroom.

Question 3

Should I Choose a PSU Based on Tier List Rankings?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but only after calculating your system’s power requirements. The PSU Tier List helps compare build quality, reliability, and performance, but wattage suitability must come first.

Question 4

Are Modular Power Supplies Better Than Non-Modular?

Accepted Answer

Modular PSUs allow you to connect only the cables you need, improving cable management and airflow. While performance is similar, modular units provide cleaner builds and easier installation.

Question 5

Do I need an ATX 3.1 power supply for a new gaming PC?

Accepted Answer

ATX 3.1 is worth considering when buying a PSU for a graphics card that uses a 16-pin power connection. It incorporates the revised 12V-2×6 connector design, which changes the power and sense-pin lengths. However, an existing PSU does not automatically need replacement. Check its capacity, approved cables, and your GPU manufacturer’s requirements before deciding.

Question 6

Does an 80 PLUS Gold rating mean a PSU belongs in Tier A?

Accepted Answer

No. 80 PLUS Gold is an efficiency certification, while a quality tier considers a broader set of criteria. Electrical performance, protection behaviour, and other design characteristics can affect tier placement. Two Gold-certified PSUs can therefore receive different assessments. Read the exact model’s test report alongside its efficiency rating.

Question 7

What do Cybenetics ETA and LAMBDA ratings mean?

Accepted Answer

ETA evaluates efficiency-related performance, including overall efficiency, power factor, standby consumption, and 5VSB efficiency. LAMBDA evaluates acoustic performance using measured noise levels. These ratings help you compare energy efficiency and operating noise, but neither should be treated as a complete PSU quality or safety ranking.

Question 8

Why do some power supplies show “Not tiered”?

Accepted Answer

“Not tiered” means we have not matched that exact record to a supported quality-tier assessment. It does not mean the PSU failed testing. Our database includes newer models and revisions, while the 174 historical tier matches use the Cultists list dated 11 April 2023. An older model’s ranking is not automatically transferred to a newer revision.

Question 9

Can I reuse modular cables when replacing my PSU?

Accepted Answer

Only reuse them if the manufacturer explicitly confirms compatibility with the replacement model. Similar-looking connectors can have different wiring, including between product series from the same brand. Use the cables supplied with the new PSU or replacements listed in its official compatibility guide. Incorrect cables can damage connected components.

Question 10

Why does the database show separate 115V and 230V results?

Accepted Answer

PSU efficiency can change with the AC input voltage, and Cybenetics publishes separate efficiency requirements for 115V and 230V testing. Select the voltage relevant to your electricity supply and compare models under the same test condition. A missing result at one voltage should not be replaced with the other voltage’s measurement.
